Rhode Island’s vibrant hospitality industry, a cornerstone of our economy, relies on a skilled and dedicated workforce. At the RI Hospitality Association, we are committed to nurturing this talent pipeline through our RI Education Foundation (RIHEF).

RIHEF, in partnership with the National Restaurant Association, empowers the next generation of hospitality professionals through innovative programs such as ProStart®. ProStart® engages over 1,500 Rhode Island high school students annually in culinary arts and hospitality management, combining rigorous classroom instruction with invaluable real-world experience, mentorship, and industry partnerships. This program equips students with essential technical skills, fostering professionalism and creating a critical pipeline of talent for the industry.

A key highlight is the annual Rhode Island High School Culinary Arts Competition, where students showcase their skills in a high-pressure environment. This premier event, held at Crowne Plaza in Warwick, provides a platform for aspiring chefs and restaurateurs to compete for scholarships and the opportunity to represent Rhode Island at the prestigious National ProStart® Invitational. These competitions not only recognize exceptional talent but also underscore the vital role of education and mentorship in preparing students for successful careers.

The impact of ProStart® extends far beyond the classroom. Graduates often attribute their success to the program’s foundation, which instilled in them confidence and valuable skills. This transformative power is evident within our own organization, with Victoria Greco and Cindy Stepanian, our Manager of Marketing and Events and Director of Operations, respectively, both successful ProStart® alumni.

RIHEF’s commitment extends to supporting professionals at all stages of their careers. Programs like the Cook Apprenticeship and ServSuccess® certifications, complemented by the resources offered at the RIHEF Hospitality Training Academy, provide valuable tools for skill enhancement and career advancement. By investing in training programs focused on food safety, customer service, and management, we strengthen the entire workforce, bolstering industry resilience.

Scholarships, such as the Alfred A. Zannella Memorial Scholarship, play a crucial role in removing financial barriers for aspiring hospitality professionals. By supporting students from all backgrounds, these scholarships foster diversity and inclusion within the industry.

RIHEF fosters strong collaborations with educators, industry leaders, and community partners to ensure program relevance and impact. Leaders like Traci Dufresne, RIHEF’s Director of Education, play a pivotal role in connecting schools with industry professionals, creating a robust support network for students and employers. These partnerships address current workforce needs and prepare the industry for future challenges. By engaging in these programs, employers gain access to a pool of skilled, motivated, and industry-ready talent.

Sustained investment in workforce development is paramount for the continued growth and resilience of Rhode Island’s hospitality sector. At RIHEF, we remain dedicated to empowering individuals and strengthening the industry. Mentorship, scholarships, and robust educational programs are integral to this mission. By supporting these initiatives, industry stakeholders not only secure their own success but also contribute to a thriving community where opportunity and excellence define the future of hospitality. Together, we can ensure that hospitality remains a cornerstone of our economy, offering rewarding careers and exceptional experiences for all.
