She had no prior direct fashion design experience before starting her brand in 2018. Barkisu previously worked in Human Services and has a Master of Science degree in Human Development and Family Studies, Specialization in Child and Adolescent Development from the University of Rhode Island. She redirected her career pursuits and decided to pursue her passion for fashion, teaching herself to sew, and started her clothing line, Barkisu, LLC.
