Each month, Shop in RI Magazine profiles one member of a weekly business networking group called “The Dream Team,” that meets in Smithfield. In this issue, we meet Javier R. Alfonzo of Sente Stoneworks, LLC, in Pawtucket.
Javier’s business began last May, after working in graphic design and other industry jobs for more than a decade. He fancies creating a work that is memorable for his clients. They are looked upon as keepsakes for their longevity and craftsmanship that goes into each project.
Do not think Javier takes his time because the job is easy. There is a process involved that takes precision and patience. The mark of his work is paying attention to detail.
Javier said that there are no rushing projects of this magnitude.
“These are works of art that take plenty of time to compile. It can take 6-8 hours a day, for months, to get the lettering, relief work, and/or sculpture down perfectly. It takes plenty of time and awareness to make the stone carving stand out.”
Javier’s foray into calligraphy is what launched him into his career. His love of letters started with casual sketches, using fountain pens before moving to professional instruments, like metal nibs, ink sticks, and pencils, where he diligently builds them to perfection. In November 2010, a three-hour elective course at a Boston Calligraphy Conference on stone carving set his direction, professionally.
He focuses on memorials of all kinds, interior architectural design elements, and fine art stone carvings, among other works. Projects can take between 1-3 years, based on the materials needed, importing them, and the time needed to complete them.
As for joining the Dream Team, Javier said that it was a great opportunity for him to interact with other professionals, learn from their experiences, and educate them about his services.
“As artists, we are secluded in a space for months at a time. We usually don’t get a chance to go out and meet other people. This was my opportunity to make that happen,” he said.
“The Dream Team” currently has 20 members. They meet every Wednesday morning, from
7:00 AM until 8:30 AM, at the Home2Suites Hilton on Douglas Pike (Rte. 7) in Smithfield, across from Laura’s Bar and Grill. The group is looking to grow its chapter and is interested in meeting professionals from various industries, including HVAC, event planning, personal injury attorneys, and photography.
