Whether you’re a local or visiting, the Ocean State offers a plethora of pick-your-own (PYO) opportunities that promise a delightful day for families, friends, and solo adventurers alike.

I will always fondly remember the fall season of many years back, when my husband always insisted on Sundays being “family days,” and together, with the kiddos, we would participate in some type of fun event. For my family, apple and pumpkin picking was an annual event, beginning when our children were still in diapers.  Several of our family and friends, along with their children never missed a season to take advantage of these activities, making them memorable experiences for our growing children.

Below are the RI farms that offer the experiences that you and your family can also make into memorable, annual traditions.

Sweet Berry Farm – Middletown

Middletown, RI

Apple Picking Season: Late August – Early October

Hours: Fridays–Sundays, 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Sweet Berry Farm, one of Rhode Island’s oldest orchards, offers a picturesque setting for apple picking. With a variety of apples available, visitors can enjoy the scenic views while selecting their perfect fruit. The farm also provides other seasonal produce, making it a great spot for a family outing.

Phantom Farms – Cumberland

Cumberland, RI

Apple Picking Season: Mid-September – October

Hours: Daily, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Phantom Farms boasts over 15 apple varieties, including Honeycrisp, Cortland, and McIntosh. The orchard’s well-maintained grounds and friendly staff ensure a pleasant picking experience. After harvesting, visitors can indulge in fresh apple cider and homemade baked goods at the farm’s bakery.

Steere Orchard – Greenville

Apple Picking Season: Late August – October

Steere Orchard, a fourth-generation family farm, offers a wide selection of apples, including Gala, Fuji, and Rhode Island Greening. Cucumber Hill Farm – Scituate

Scituate, RI

Pumpkin Picking Season: September 21 – October 27

Hours: Weekends, 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM
