Visiting Newport is typically filled with visions of delightful seafood fare and sunny beaches that will promote those beautiful tan lines. It’s a fact that Newport has always had that whole summer thing down pat. But believe it or not, winter is when the real magic happens. Winter sunrises unobstructed and in full glory, snow-kissed seasides, and a seat by the fire—it’s a feeling unlike any other. Not to mention, winter is when all things cozy get kicked up a notch. Heated igloos with a bay view? Got it. A gourmet hot chocolate bar in a former private mansion? Got it. So sure, Newport has summer down pat, but you better believe it nails winter too.
Below are some favorite winter experiences in and around Newport for winter entertainment, food, and fun.
SLEDDING AT FORT ADAMS STATE PARK
When the ground is covered in a blanket of snow, it’s finally time to break out your favorite snow gear, bundle up and go sledding. Head to Fort Adams State Park (near the Rugby pitch and fields), where you will find some great hills that are ideal for sledders of any age to enjoy.
Tip: If Fort Adams is too busy, head over to Morton Park, a quieter spot with a smaller hill, which is great for families and children of all ages!
CLIFF WALK
Cliff Walk is known to be a go-to summer activity—it’s where the serenity of salt air and the familiar sound of crashing waves meets with the awe of Gilded Age architecture. Add a dusting of snow to this breathtaking walking path, and Cliff Walk transforms into a magical winter wonderland that is an absolute must-see.
Please note – Disclaimer: Conditions on the Cliff Walk may be icy in wintry conditions. Wear appropriate shoes and clothing, and exercise caution in the snowy conditions.
BELLEVUE AVENUE & NEWPORT MANSIONS
Take a stroll (or drive) down Bellevue Avenue and take in the picturesque views of this historic street that is surrounded by trees and mansions from the Gilded Age, all covered in a blanket of snow. When you’re ready to warm up, head inside one of the mansions and take a tour of the beautiful, historic Gilded Age summer homes.
Please note: Planning a visit to one of the Newport Mansions? Be sure to check the operating schedule, prior to your arrival, to plan accordingly.

It was a breath of fresh air to see how much she truly enjoyed her job. The waitstaff was equally as friendly. The food was absolutely amazing. The igloo on the water was a fantastic way to celebrate our dear friend’s 50th birthday.”
What’s even more impressive are the entirety of the reviews, where most diners shared their own awesome experience…
